A new perspective
Imagine for a moment that you find yourself waking up in a strange and magical place. It could be as quotidian as your own bedroom - but there is a sense of lucid dreaming, a patina of otherworldliness in the quality of the light shining into your room.
You step out into the open - and are immediately bathed in the golden light which ebbed into your bedroom, moments ago. The magic of this light-source becomes clear when you realise that it emanates from a massive star, the sole and brightest celestial object in this beautiful realm you have just stepped out into. This light emanated from 93 million miles away, and travelled for 8 minutes to alight on you. In a way, you are experiencing its mysterious history as well.
All around you is the rest of the Universe - there is nothing physical between you and the infinitude of the Universe. Look down and there is ‘ground’ - but there is nothing ultimately there, for if you look far enough, there is the very same void on the other side. You are floating in space.
It is as though you have stepped out onto the deck of a vast spaceship.
You wake up - and realise that it wasn’t a dream.
Welcome to planet Earth.
